Sky Lounge 2 Restaurant

Innovative Design and Engineering Solutions.

The Sky Lounge Restaurant 2 project was defined with the aim of transforming the rooftop space on the 14th floor into a dynamic space in the form of a restaurant with a unique view of Tehran. The main mission in the design of this project was to create a feeling of outdoor space, a wide and open environment with an eternal view of the city and maximum use of natural light and the night sky.
Challenges
One of the main challenges of the project was the construction on the roof of the existing building, because in engineering, the load limitation to be applied on the existing skeleton needed be taken into account. Considering all aspects, the best option to create a roof, was using a structure that can cover the entire space having minimum weight and no middle column.
Design and engineering
In the design of the roof and walls, the main goal was having a view of the sky and a panoramic view of Tehran. The tensile roof, inspired by the arch in Iranian architecture, was designed in the form of arch and engineered in such way that no middle column was needed, more importantly, this self-standing structure applies little weight to the existing building. It is also earthquake resistant and can stand all weather conditions. The arch form of the fabric is double-curved which brings excellent wind resistance and can direct and drain water and snow. The designed gutters help draining the water properly.
The distances between the arch structures was covered with glass, which, in addition to creating a view of the sky, allows natural daylight in. Also, the gaps between the glass and the fabric allows natural air circulation. Sun energy glasses was chosen for the roof and walls, which have the ability to prevent greenhouse effect by UV filtering.
Placement and Arrangement
Since the restaurant is located on the 14th floor, it was necessary to have all equipment, including a full kitchen, bakery, dishwashing and preparation area, bathroom, etc. In this regard, after considering the existing structures and accesses (escape stairs, voids and elevators), the southern part of the roof was built and equipped for the kitchens and restaurant facilities, and the northern part with an eternal view of Alborz Mountains and the city of Tehran was designed as the dining area with the capacity to serve 200 guests.
The furniture was designed and arranged in such way to provide the guests’ privacy as much as possible, while all guests having a good view of outside.
Lighting
Inspired by the night sky, hanging chandeliers in the shape of the moon were designed and built above the restaurant counters. The entire restaurant is illuminated with indirect and diffuse light so that the interior light does not obstruct the beautiful view of Tehran at nights.
